P. C. Young (2026) The Art and Craft of Data-Based Mechanistic Modelling, Springer-Nature (to be published 2026).

The development to the Tools in CAPTAIN and their use in modelling, forecasting and control can be considered as an example of Art & Craft in action. Wendy has been involved in more traditional Art & Craft all her life, working mainly in textile art and, in particular on ‘Ruskin Lace’, a needle lace craft established in the English Lake District during the 19th Century and promoted by John Ruskin. The ‘Etui’, an embroiderer’s workbox, on the left, is decorated with Ruskin Lace and it opens, as shown on the right, to reveal the embroiderer’s tools. It is felt that this link between traditional and technical Art & Craft is important: it helps to focus on the development and utilisation of the technical tools and balance the often over-played importance of the Mathematical theories that support the underlying algorithms.
